1970s show challenged attitudes by defying gender stereotypes and boldly addressing topical issues, broadcaster says

They may be best remembered for wacky props such as their oversized flat caps and a bicycle made for three as well as their banging theme tune “Goodies, goody goody yum yum”.

But it may be time to reassess the surreal 1970s and early 80s sketch show The Goodies and regard it not just as silly fun but as a catalyst for social change.

It’s an interesting one as I watched it when it was broadcast and it felt all a bit silly but I was also a kid so I may not have got the nuances.

It then got overshadowed by The New Wave of British Comedy and fell awkwardly between that and groundbreaking groups like the Goons and the Pythons.

However, perhaps it is time to go and reappraise it. Pity it’s only available on DVD boxsets but such is the fate of a lot of British comedy these days.

My favourite was always Ecky Thump. The later installment “Kung Fu Kaperskilled a man. Although the use of blackface in that might explain why it is still on DVD.
