If you want to vote, you have to comment.

It encourages dialog and discourages horde mentality voting.

Edit: Judging from the number of downvotes, my opinion is very popular. My apologies 😅

Disclaimer: Not referring to this post, just in general

Some posts/comments are either from trolls and/or are so stupid that a response from anyone is a waste of time. Downvoting those and moving on is the best way.

    i.e. don’t feed the trolls

Edit: Upvoted you since this is an unpopular opinion that has at least had some thought put into it. However, I feel like it would just encourage trolls since people would be expected to feed them.

I would argue, if trolls had to supply a comment, they would tire out or just get banned.

But in your plan they don’t need to, right? They can still post some troll comment or post and ignore all responses.

I do not post comments that often, simply because I agree or disagree, but have no new insights to add to the discussion. I have seen too many ‘me2’ posts in my time.

People really don’t get the point of this community huh? For the record, I also think the downsides of the idea outweigh the benefits, but disagreement is to expected with an unpopular opinion. It was still neat to think about. Thanks for posting OP.

I like to know people’s opinions. Rarely am I submitting ideas with the desire to be ignored.

I agree. But unfortunately it’s utopian to assume that the majority of users would go through the trouble to justify their downvotes (or upvotes) - that’s simply too much to ask, even of Lemmy. People here are like everywhere else: they want to be entertained and express their opinion, but under no circumstances do they want to take any effort because that would be too time-consuming and therefore unreasonable. For most people, this is all that they are ever willig to contribute to the Internet. Not too much if you ask me, but apperently it’s enough for any Social Media Site. Your Post is a good example: Noone explained why they disagree but they still downvote your post and think themselfs very smart for it. It’s sad imo.
