Charities and private citizens should have the power to take polluting water companies to court because the Environment Agency cannot keep up with the industry’s rule-breaking, the Liberal Democrats have said.

The party is calling for the creation of “citizen regulators” as part of efforts to combat sewage discharges into Britain’s rivers.

Its proposals also include a radical overhaul of the industry, abolishing “flawed” regulator Ofwat and turning water firms into “public benefit companies” which would put the environment before profit.

Here’s a fucking idea for you know, the government: take away the power water companies have to pollute waterways. Or you know, better yet, take away the bloody water companies and you know nationalise utilities? Fuck my actual life this is like a month python skit.

You know what? Sure. Let’s play by the conservation playbook and empower citizens to sue over laws that should be enforceable by the government. Start with gun companies and polluters.

If a below average person in Texas can sue someone for assisting in transporting a woman to get an abortion (which is evidently legal because it’s not the government enforcing shit), let’s turn around and do it on issues that matter to us.

Yeah I’d love to see this in the US. It’s painfully obvious the government isn’t in a rush to regulate polluters or arms makers.
