You should learn more about the Danes and their military. 16 weeks paid work, worker’s union, and helping the community. But in 2014 99.1% of the lowly 4,200 spots were filled by volunteers, so good luck actually enjoying that summer camp. Straight to a full-time job or study instead :( Needless to say, this is why you’ve never heard of a Dane going abroad to escape service lol

This ain’t yo momma’s US military.

How is that slavery? In a sane country, military service is actually a great tool to teach young adults how to behave within a diverse group and give life skills many lack at that age. In my homeland military service is only mandatory for men and i think it’s a shame and sexist that because I’m a woman I’m considered too fragile to do it.

You’re forcing people to work for you who otherwise wouldn’t.

        That’s textbook slavery.

I’m sure all the arguments you make in favor of it are similar to ones whites made to enslave blacks. “It’s good for them.” Lol.

In Austria we still have conscription and the officer in charge of our company outright said to us during basic training : “This right here fullfills all the criteria of slavery if conscription wasn’t explicitly allowed I’d be in jail now!”

Nope. Text book slavery requires either ownership. Or forced labour without renumeration.

Not saying conscription is good. But slavery is a different thing. And using the term lightly is an insult to those who have faced it.

It’s forced labor. It doesn’t get any clearer cut than that. It’s slavery.

Nope. Official def is either ownership. Or forced labour without renumeration.

Forced labour with renumeration is not slavery.

          Just shitty.

This reminded me of a video I saw recently that researched the concept of “fragging” which wikipedia defines as “the deliberate or attempted killing of a soldier, usually a superior, by a fellow soldier. U.S. military personnel coined the word during the Vietnam War, when such killings were most often committed or attempted with a fragmentation grenade,[2] to make it appear that the killing was accidental or during combat with the enemy.”

This is the best summary I could come up with:

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark wants to increase the number of young people doing military service by extending conscription to women and increasing the time of service from 4 months to 11 months for both genders, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Wednesday.

Denmark currently has up to 9,000 professional troops on top of the 4,700 conscripts undergoing basic training, according to official figures.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stressed that “Russia does not pose a threat to Denmark.”

All physically fit men over the age of 18 are called up for military service, which lasts roughly four months.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the new system would require a change in the law, which he said will happen in 2025 and take effect in 2026.

“A broader basis for recruiting that includes all genders is needed,” he said, adding it will create “a more versatile and more complete defense.”
