That is a long time to be paying a guy whose style isn’t known to age well in a player’s 30s. I could see this getting bought out or cap dumped in a couple years.

By the time Washington is competitive again I don’t think he’ll have much left on the contract anyway. Someone over on !caps@lemmy.world said it best when they said he was Washington’s ‘Tank Commander’.

They’re going to suck for a bit.

I think that’s mostly true, but Caps fans would probably hope to be better before the contract is up in eight years. Take it from a Sabres fan, that long of a rebuild does a lot to your love of the game.

My worry is that Wilson will be awful in the last few years when/if the Caps are ready to be good again at that point. Sure he can be the tank commander, but at some point he’ll just weigh them down with a contract that will be very hard to move.

Probably an overpayment but this guy is likely the Capitals next captain after Ovechkin hangs them up, and as much as it pains me to admit it, this isn’t a team that’s going to be competitive for the vast majority of this contract, so cap issues shouldn’t be a problem.

Fans love players like Wilson, can play on first line and tough. But the contract smells like another Lucic contract. Over paid but the team fans will love having him on the team.
