you hate chomsky for his political opinions, i hate chomsky for his linguistics opinions (and also his political opinions). we are not the same

and then alcohol ended up getting loaned back into arabic as (al-)kuḥūl
Really not beating the supporting Nazis allegations with this
Just want to say that Arabic is such a fucking cool language I love it. Definitely making me regret having posted cring until now by only studying European Indo-European languages. Also to my neighbours, I hope you enjoy hearing me practise my emphatic consonants and ع while you are trying to sleep lmao
I’ve seen literally one of those shows lol, definitely know the feeling
Not knowing the context, the case in the screenshot just seems like bad communication tbh and I think that would have gone over a lot of neurotypical people’s heads. It’s conceivable that there might have been some context where that meaning was more clear, but sometimes people also just communicate things poorly
The time to stop using Chrome was yesterday, but I guess today is the next best
Canada literally has pretty much a straight line across flat land which is home to about half the country/20 million people in the form of the Quebec City-Windsor corridor and somehow doesn’t have HSR which is wild
Not 100% related but one thing I’ve noticed here is that it seems to have some trouble differentiating between places where you can cycle and places where you can walk. So if I’m trying to get walking directions in a place where for whatever reason the bike path doesn’t have an accompanying sidewalk it will just tell you to walk in the bike path. Conversely it seems to not realise that certain streets/areas aren’t for bikes at certain times and will try and have you bike there
I know everyone here is doing China discourse here but the honestly not insignificant inequality that remained in the USSR is kinda interesting to see.
Vandals probably, but maybe the Ostrogoths as well they were cool
Just did my Canadian citizenship ceremony and in the oath I had to repeat a couple lines about how the laws of Canada and the constitution recognising and protecting the rights of indigenous people
Didn’t Odoacer accept being (at least nominally) under Zeno though? That’s a bit less baller imo
The Eastern Roman Empire was the cooler Roman Empire anyway
Unfortunately I could never really get that into playing and practising solo and although I continued for a while regardless I eventually dropped my lessons, something I now kinda regret, but being part of an orchestra was always my favourite part of playing the violin.
Lack of knowledge in linguistics (or languages in general) is also what stopped my conlang project in its tracks.
Yeah I’ve had this issue too, but it hasn’t stopped me trying. I do try my best to understand the linguistics stuff enough to make sure my language is making sense, but it feels like a never-ending battle as there’s always more you can learn and add. I’m kinda fine with that though, and if it weren’t for conlanging I wouldn’t have realised I was into linguistics and started studying it at university.
L’internationale sera le genre humain
The Internationale is so good, definitely my favourite socialist song. It’s not even like my favourite musically, but it just hits different somehow, it feels more unifying. Also the fact it’s been translated into pretty much every language in existence and had different local spins put on it is great
i mean he’s been hugely influential in linguistics and it’d be dumb to pretend he hasn’t made contributions of value, but it’s fun to dunk on him and there’s definitely a fair bit that’s somewhat controversial and that i disagree with
