There was an old ds game called drone tactics. I remember at the beginning you had two characters join your party. They were pretty good and I leveled them up a lot. Then they betray you, you fight them for a few missions, and they join your group again.

Unfortunately they join you at a preset level, which was like ten levels less then when they left me.
