I still don’t quite get this one. Was the whole game a simulation? Or at which party did the simulation begin?

This is also exactly why people hated the treatment of Joel in 2. You spend an entire game forced into his shoes/role of “hero” and it really affects your perception of him. With player agency removed, I think the show had more breathing room to portray the dark side of his actions.
