This is very concerning given that horror movie fans are major advocates for physical media. They are collectors. They go out of their way to own their most treasured movies. That’s why there’s a slew of horror underground labels that exist.
Disney has been steadily pushing physical media out of the way for a few years now, but this is certainly the biggest step they’ve made so far. It’s quite clear that Disney is pushing for a) audiences to go digital and/or b) subscription boosts to Disney Plus.
Its been nine months since the theatrical release of “Barbarian” and still not a word about a blu-ray disc release. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m in no rush to get my physical copy of “Barbarian,” but have we finally reached the point where we need to accept the fact that we might not be getting all the movies we want on physical media?
Sounds like a good reason to have homebrew physical copies.
Yeah, at some point I will make physical versions of the 4k Star Wars OT original version restorations and that’ll get my thinking about what else I’d want.
That said, a Chinese seller has them for £11.65 (possibly from a Thai knock-off if the cover is right) and there are quite a few people on their selling Blu-rays of things currently only available on streaming services, it’s just a bit of a punt quality-wise.
I was thinking have quality cover jackets and actual copies of movies. Either have them available for home printing or for online order. Make it as close as possible to what a physical release could be.
If the studios don’t want to do it I hope someone will take advantage of the opportunity.
You can get that kind of thing for old video games. Why not movies too?
Over on Reddit (can’t find the specific post at the moment) someone shared the files they’d made to create case inlays and slipcovers for the restored original release of the Star Wars Original Trilogy (hence my mention of it above). I think they got someone on Etsy to print them out for them.
If that kind of thing were of interest to people, I can’t see why it couldn’t be posted here as it is not as it is not advocating piracy - people buy things like custom slipcovers to complement their purchases. I was just looking at a Malignant one earlier.

I did find another custom Malignant slipcover on eBay but it is a bit too much (as is the steelbook design), while the Blu-ray and 4k covers are very elegant designs.
Oh, and I also found the custom 4k Star Wars Blu-ray slipcovers and inlays that I mentioned above. It’s that kind of fan-made, not-for-profit efforts that I’d like to encourage here. Perhaps, one day, when Lemmy gets a wiki it’d be easy enough to create a page for them. The Blu-ray.com forum has a vast custom cover thread.
Old videogames are a lot less likely to get you in legal trouble outside of Nintendo, Rockstar, and a few other examples.
I’m curious as to how you would achieve that. Would you re-encode the video file to a 4K layout and burn that to a 100gb blank Blu-ray disc? All allegedly and hypothetically of course.
It’d have to be, as I haven’t given much thought to it beyond “ooo that’s a thing I’d like to do.” As 4k80 isn’t out yet, there’s no great rush.
That said, my vague plan is: grab the latest versions of 4k77, 4k80 and 4k83, I already have the custom inlays/slipcovers downloaded from here (scroll down to my comments) and then have a word with my friend and (Odeon Limitless buddy) who is a VFX freelancer who largely works from home and has some very fancy kit. I imagine sending large files in physical formats is inconvenient/impractical these days (I know he is paying for industrial-strength bandwidth) but his set-up is top notch and it may contain everything I need or he’ll have some ideas.
That’s probably the lowest bar for testing this kind of thing out and I’ll see how it all works out. If it’s an expensive pain I might just take a punt on Chinese bootlegs. However, I reckon, if Prey sells well, we’ll get Barbarian or a boutique publisher may winkle the rights for a limited edition out from Disney - it will sell well.
The fact that we are now getting Prey gives me hope but we are now getting on for a year from release and Barbarian was a big hit.
