If you read the excellent piece about physical media over at The Digital Bits, things aren’t quite as bad as they seem just yet. I’ve been buying films on VHS, laserdisc, VideoCD, DVD, Blu-ray and now 4K. I want to own the films, not just but a digital licence which works until the service stops or the rights expire and the film vanishes.
Good dammit, I will get The Abyss on 4K, I’ve been waiting over 20 years! 😁
A lot of this probably has to do with dying physical media. As streaming and digital " purchasing" becomes more prevalent fewer people are finding the need to buy physical media so there’s less of a reason to upgrade their DVD players for hundreds of dollars. The people who are buying UHD are those like myself who want the brighter colors and picture and those who got 4K through a separate purchase like a game system
