Best anime. I like the part where dragons get obliterated by missiles and tank shells.

That sentence only applies to the first episode. The rest of the series is an overly jingoistic power fantasy where the MC goes around collecting waifus for his harem and the japanese army exports democracy japanese culture.

I watched an episode and said, “Oh, I’m not the target audience, a teenaged Japanese child who is malleable enough to be tricked into joining the JDF.”

The idea of a modern soldier going to a fantasy world and getting a “harem” sounds like a propagandized retelling of a war crime.

Summoning Japan is still kinda power fantasy, but it’s much more focused on the world itself rather than any specific characters. It’s also consistently REALLY good. It’s still running, but there’s quite a bit already out before you have to wait.

Manifest Fantasy is a similar premise to GATE but much better, though is still an early Work In Progress; it too is REALLY good so far (there’s five chapters out so far AFAIK)

Then there’s Summoning America, written by the translators of Summoning Japan. I haven’t read it but I’ve heard good things about it.

Japanese army exporting japanese culture into a fantasy land that’s heavily influenced by their own culture… Sounds like 'murica invading bri’ain or something

The anime is not TOO bad, but i’ve been firmly told to stay the fuck away from the original sources. I wish we had a more grounded one though.

P-51 Dragon Fighter: a WWII movie with Nazi dragons, a surprisingly manageable romance subplot and a ‘final boss’ stolen from Ace Combat 04, starring a whole bunch of people we’ve never heard of because their careers peaked in this work of art.

Eh? The dragons getting shot with missiles and tanks is episode 17. There are waifus and stuff of course but there is even more fantasy world tropes getting smacked down by modern tech.

How do we know elves won’t refine gunpowder weaponry first in their quest for ever greater ranges and precision? Maybe precisely engineered gyro stabilized rocket propelled ‘arrows’ is the path elves take, vs the humans big boom slow heavy artillery?

They’d make the most precise cannon known to history that used such specific msterials on the ammo that it would fire once a year, at best.

Reminds me of a short story I once read in a Polish sci-fi and fantasy magazine, where a portal to fantasy world opened and Elves conquered Eastern Europe and I think Russia. At one point narrator tells us once Elves discovered humans made satelites, they made their own. Our of wood covered in magic runes, then coated with mithral. I don’t recall how they got it in space but narrator tells us once it began orbiting the Earth and SENDING SIGNALS several members of NASA had to be instituionalized.
