The film is something of a big deal, despite its unheralded Netflix premiere. The Kitchen marks Daniel Kaluuya’s (Nope, Judas and the Black Messiah) directorial debut, alongside short film director Kibwe Tavares. Kaluuya also co-wrote the film with Gangs of London’s Joe Murtagh, cementing a vision of dystopian, near-future London alongside an unconventional tale of found family. It’s Blokamp-esque in design, but is centered on Britain’s Black diaspora. It’s a shame such a unique film can’t be seen on the biggest screen possible, but it at least deserves to be seen by as many eyes as possible.

Dystopian is boring. Everyone is doing it. It’s like no one has the imagination to see a decent future.

There are books than manage, TV could too. They just don’t want to risk not feeding us what they know we already eat.

Considering that, the way things are going, a dystopia would be a good result, perhaps everyone could serve us up more utopian views of the future…

If no has hope, no one bothers trying. I think things will get worse before they get better, but going better is the only real option. Plus, economics is starting pushing the right way already. Green energy is cheap energy. EVs are already over all cheaper. Same with solar and home batteries and the costs keep coming down while capability goes up. There are stories of hopepunk and solarpunk out there. Let’s hear those.

I really wish Netflix would stop doing things “quietly”. I saw the trailer and it looks really good! I’m gonna check it out.

Same, I don’t really want to read the article, I’d rather just take it all in with this one!

Edit: Oh wait, after reading the other comments maybe it isn’t that great lol. I was kind of hoping for something like Children of Men, but it’s maybe a little more mediocre. I’ll still give it a go.

Very boring. I was expecting some action, but it was all drama. The plot is nice, but not my cup of tea. It reminded me of several movies, judge Dredd (but without the judge). That French movie district 13. I didn’t like it personally.

Watched it in the cinema - stunning film. I think they sacrifice some logic in the plot for the sake of visual impact but it works and so I’ll let them off (this time). I went with a friend who does special effects for film, TV and ads who has a much more critical eye for such things and he was also bowled over - the thing he flagged up was the way quality CGI was dropped into real locations, as opposed to actors against a green screen, which gives it a lot more weight and impact.

I saw it on a plane last week, so didn’t experience the full flavour of it. I should rewatch it on a better screen.

I did like it a lot, but the AI stuff didn’t make sense to me. They perfected intelligence but not advanced robotics outside of the human form. They made the AI people way too human like. A war on AI would be less material and more networking and hacking. I’m not really into Anime but the movie Ghost In The Shell does a good job on dealing with humans and machines.

But still. I’d recommend it to people and I’ll happy watch it again!

              The visuals were very good.

There’s quite a bit of it that made me go “hold on” (I had a lot of questions about NOMAD too) but they carry it off with excellent performances and stunning visuals that I just went along with it in the end.

I have not. I’ll give that one a shot, too. I’m not too big on “drama only” movies. I like some action to make it entertaining. Is this one good?

I find this with most Netflix movies. Maybe I’m just not keeping up with the time, I don’t know. Netflix movies seem to have a lot of not much with only a little excitement.

Oh my god, you’ve read my mind and said what I’ve always wanted to say and didn’t know how to express it. It’s a lot of “not much with only a little excitement”

It’s definitely hedged with caveats - it probably is the best dystopian sci-fi film so far this year. It just doesn’t have much competition.

Its ok. If you expect an action filled movie, its not. Its an ok story but can get kinda slow.

I watched a few days ago and thought it sucked. Didn’t connect with any of the characters, the characters acted in incomprehensibly stupid ways, and the plot made no sense. 2/10 at best from me.

What you saw in the trailer with the bikes is almost all of it. But its an ok movie. Good story driven entertainment nothing more nothing less .
