Yes, a little late in the day but I’ve watched a lot this month and will work back through the list.
31st January - The End We All Start With: Jodie Comer really carries this film, with some top-notch co-stars dropping it but it feels oddly… weightless or dreamlike. There is no strong feeling of place and so, even though she goes on quite a journey, you don’t get a feeling for how challenging that would be, especially as she’s often on foot. Resources, which are often central to a disaster or apocalypse film (even a mini apocalypse like this one) are really only important when they help drive the journey - they run out of food so have to move on but then she can hike to (I assume) Scotland on what appears to be half a mouthful of thin stew without any difficulty. And without much protection from the weather either. So there’s no real feeling of peril or threat, just a bit of wandering about that feels very forgettable.
30th January - Napoleon Dynamite (20th anniversary): a classic about the power of… friendship? Vinyl kitchenware? Dance? Nunchuks? Yeah probably that last one.
- Next Goal Wins
- The Boy and the Heron
Any good?
Next Goal Wins was pretty good. The Boy and the Heron I enjoyed once I got into it but it was very odd!
