I’m thinking games that have traditionally been in one genre, but that you’d love to see take a complete 180.

Mario + Rabbids, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and the newly announced Callisto Protocol roguelite.

Maybe you’d like to see a Mario platformer in the style of Cuphead or Meat Boy. Maybe it’s a new take on Zelda…by combining it with a turn based RPG.

Let’s have some fun and see what we can mash together.

    1. Hitman series as an X-Com or Jagged Alliance style turn based strategy. I think that’s pretty easy to imagine and self explanatory.

    2. FIFA or Pro Evo as an ascii turn based tactical roguelike. I don’t mean running through dungeons etc, I mean still playing football, just that it’s controlled on a grid, with you controlling a single @, and the other players moving when you move a tile etc, keyboard shortcuts for pass/lob/shoot/skill manoeuvres etc.

    3. Rugby League Live series in the style of Sensible World of Soccer. Pretty self explanatory. Rugby pretty much missed the “fast paced arcade action, 3 minute match” era of computer games, and they just churn out these slow, buggy Fifa-likes each year.

The closest I’m aware of currently are “Phantom Doctrine” (as a spy Xcom) and “Football Tactics & Glory” (as a turn based football game).

I’d love to see another franchise attempt a kart racer. Bloodborne kart was super popular and Mario Kart could use some real competition.

More of a genre, but I’d like to see survival horror (like Alan Wake and Silent Hill) as walking simulators or similar. No combat, just atmosphere and story.

The worst part of the Alan Wake games (at least for me) is the combat. I’d be happy to ditch those for less of that.

I think SOMO actually patched in a mode that stripped out all combat for that exact reason.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories comes close. You walk around searching for your daughter, piece together what happened and occasionally run away from monsters. My first Silent Hill game and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I’ll admit that’s a new concept for me. However there’s one major challenge:

Lego games and horror go together like peanut butter and antifreeze. Just the very concept of melding Lego and something that’s supposed to be scary removes the scary from the scary half. They’re just too silly, I think the only fear Lego can make work is being barefoot around them.

This idea reminds me of what I’d imagine the mishmash of games styles you could put together in Game Dev Story would be like.

For me it’s Cyberpunk Racing. Not quite to F-Zero or Wipeout but right before. With the customization level and style of that great NFS run from Underground to Most Wanted 05.

And I’d damn sure want the FMV story scenes! Feed that into my veins.

A live action zombie apocalypse TV show featuring… Steve! …but with mods like Botania and Create.

He’s a modern forestry engineer/lumberjack who accidentally looks an enderman in the eyes. In the act of defending himself he knocks the strange block held by the enderman right into the hands of an Allay who then goes around picking up more of them, inadvertently assembling them into a portal which opens when the enderman’s blood spills into it.

He awakes in a field full of mystical flowers and a book (journal) on a pedestal that tells him he’s not the first human to end up here with information about how to harness the power of the flowers and the materials of the world to maybe build a better life for himself and any villagers he may come across.

    His duty is to…

    Survive

“Hurry! They will appear after dark!”

Death Stranding crossed with a rail simulator like Run8. Journey across the land, restoring rail infrastructure and reviving long-dead industries!
