And some of the people who paid, then got arrested when showing their displeasure about the whole thing.

How else are you supposed to treat the peasantry? They ought to know their place.

Not an accountant, but i guess the funeral ceremony for the previous head of state - no political involvement - cost about the same. Thus swapping one non-political head of state for another cost in the region of 150mil. That seems rather a lot for someone to carry out a purely ceremonial role. Am i missing anything?

The fact that they used to rule the entire empire with impunity, and traded their absolute power for a “let us keep our money and silly clothes and we’ll give you the power if you promise not to behead us” arraignment when they saw the writing of the new world on the wall. It was either that or a costly war that they might have actually won and kept all the power.

LOL, those garish displays are just them showing everyone how much of everyone’s money they’ve taken.

Do you think royalty has always looked as silly as these two, or do they just do an exceptionally bad job of wearing the royal garb?

I had heard in the past that the monarchy and it’s trimmings are a net increase in income, via tourism.

Can someone confirm if that’s true or not?

I’m not suggesting everyone should have a monarch and a bunch of castles just for tourism.
