“Mom, what’s for dinner?”
“MUSHROOM SLAB”
“Aw, again?”“Mushroom surprise”
I’ve found and eaten one of these, and honestly it wasn’t amazing. Regular store mushrooms, agaricus bisporus, are actually better IMO. Although looks like she cooked it way better than I did.
Was it just bland, or did it have a bad taste?
It wasn’t bad, just kind of bland. Sort of like tofu.
Would have probably been good in a soup or stew then. They are like sponges and suck up the flavor.
We used to get puffball mushrooms occassionally. My mum would breadcrumb and deep fry them. Nice.
This is the way.
Sliced, breaded, and fried puffball makes an excellent fried chicken alternative for food like sandwiches or pasta dishes. I’m always a fan of puffball parm.
Interesting. I’ve always heard that they weren’t worth foraging. Maybe next season! We usually see tons around here in September/October.
I do like a nice chicken of the woods, and morels (which I can never find in the wild).
All three are pretty easy to ID, and I’d rather be an old mushroom hunter than a bold mushroom hunter.
A puffball won’t blow you away in the taste department, but they have a good texture. Maybe good foragers can afford to pass them by, but I’m not a good forager.
Actually made me sad this summer: There was a big puffball growing on a neighbor’s lawn. Knocked on the door to ask if we could take it, and they said to let it stay so they could see how large it got. Then they never picked it and I had to watch it rot away.
Ooh, yes, I should have mentioned she sliced them first!
lets start a giant mushroom farm and make eco car tires
Can you keep them fresh for a whole week after harvesting AND cutting them? Something like champignons seem to just mold away after a couple days already.
Some mushrooms cover themselves in a little mold which is still safe to eat. If it’s white and looks a little fluffy, you don’t need to throw them away yet. Specifically for champignons, that is. Not sure about other mushrooms
I imagine you’d run out of recipes before you ran out of mushroom.
We used to get these puffball mushrooms in our woods growing up. Some of them got huge (but never 5kg huge), but we never harvested and ate them. They are so alien looking!

Mushroom pizza base sounds very interesting. Is this a real combination?
I would think that the water content of the mushroom would make it weird. But if you’re not expecting a nice crisp crust, I’m sure it could be good enough. Interesting idea, for sure.
