Yeah, despite what I wrote, I don’t think the discs are going to look much better. I didn’t include the fact that some people have access to a service called Kaleidoscope which allows then to watch 80gb versions of these films. Obviously the same files that will be used on the discs and they’re reporting it’s basically the same quality.

It’s such a shame that after all this time, these are the versions we’ve ended up with. Both The Abyss and True Lies already had Blu-ray transfers created several years ago, I wish we could get those now instead.

80GB sounds about what you get from dubious online sources as well.

The use of AI is shit. You can’t rescue detail that was never filmed. Grain is fine, it’s old film stock. Blur is fine, it’s filmed at 1/48 shutter times. Taking them out is like Ringo Starr still dying his hair black. Like, sure, it looks younger, but you’re still an 80 year old man and now it’s out of place.

Terrible. This is really disappointing for releases I had been looking forward to for years.

    Really informative article.

It’s a difficult call to make, hopefully someday the tech gets to a level where we can do it at home with our players. Decide to process or not to a decent level.
