Good. He then needs to grow a backbone (something successive PMs haven’t) and tell people to fuck right off we’re rejoining. It might take a parliament or four, but someone needs to stand up to the Brexit loonies in the Tory South and Labour North.

As much as I wish we could rejoin or even that Brexit was just a bad dream…

Not going to happen. Not for a generation. Why?

      • The EU would not accept the UK back in until there is strong and sustained political desire to re-enter. This alone would be your 20 years or 4 parliament terms.
      • The EU would probably want some concessions during the rejoining process including a commitment to adopting the Euro. That alone would be controversial.
      • We can still get most of the benefits of the EU without fully joining. For example, the customs union would allow for free trade and free movement.

Yup fully agree with those points. I would be majorly surprised if in this parliament Keir even announced an intent for something like that. I suspect, if he does, it will be a third or fourth parliament thing. Unfortunately he needs to be pumping on all cylinders by then otherwise any government will be out on their heels.

      "Fuck right off we’re rejoining"

I don’t think that’s a decision entirely made by the UK and I don’t imagine the EU trusts the UK enough to bring them back. Conservative consequence can’t just be erased cleanly, it’s more so like using one of those shitty pink erasures.

Actions have consequences and I know the UK historically isn’t used to being held accountable for screwing people over, this time they messed with white Europeans so they’re going to face real consequences for a fairly long time.

As much as I agree with your definition of brexiters.

Unfortunately your solution is not an option. We live in a fptp system. This means 30+ % who agree on one thing. Are able to completely override a decided rest.

So unless all returners are willing to unite under a single policy. The brexiters will have power for ages. At least a generation or more.

So until. That huge reduction in brexiter confidence. Telling them to suck it up is just a garrenteed way to lose elections. Not giving the time needed.

Yeah that’s fair, I did say I thought this might take a parliament or four. That’s on the lower end of a generation but I agree this isn’t something that will be easily achievable in the current climate.

What would be nice to see is stronger push back on arguments driving away cooperation and closer alignment in the meantime. That is totally in our gift to do, Keir just needs the will to do it.

tell people to fuck right off we’re rejoining.

Yeah, why should we let the proles make decisions.
